NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA ‘BLUE BLIZZARD” WINTER STORM PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS
ANNOUNCED BY BOREAL COMMUNITY MEDIA
COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA ~~~~ December 21, 2022 (LSNews) Boreal Community Media, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that operates a community news and information website at boreal.org has announced the winners in its recent Winter Storm Photo Contest.
Boreal.org invited residents and visitors of Northeast Minnesota to submit their photographs from the record-breaking winter storm which the National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth named the “Blue Blizzard” of December 13-16, 2022.
According to the NWS: “The density of the snowpack exacerbated the quality of the snow to absorb the red end of the visible light spectrum, transmitting the blue end which led to many folks observing a glacier blue in holes and cracks in the snow. Because of this blue color as well as the very wet quality of the snowfall, NWS has taken to referring to this as the Blue Blizzard of 2022. Parts of the region received up to 30 inches of snow during the powerful and long-duration winter storm.”
“We know that people who live in and visit Northeastern Minnesota love to venture out in the most challenging weather conditions to capture photographs of the picturesque result of heavy snowfall and large waves on Lake Superior,” said Laura Durenberger-Grunow, Digital Content Editor for Boreal Community Media, “We wanted to celebrate their adventurous spirit and creativity by sharing their Blue Blizzard photographs with all of our readers.”
The contest ran during the height of the Blue Blizzard from December 14 to 18. Photographers were allowed one entry per person and the contest was limited only to amateur photographers.
“Our winners all had a unique take on this rare type of winter storm,” continued Durenberger Laura Durenberger-Grunow, “It was very difficult to choose our three prize winners, but we consider all of the entrants winners in sharing their beautiful and memorable images with all of our readers.”
The first prize was a $50 gift card to long-time Boreal sponsor Blue Water Café in downtown Grand Marais, MN. Second and third prize winners had the option to select a custom Boreal coffee mug or long sleeve shirt. 20 photographers participated in the competition.
