THUNDER BAY, ON  ----   June 6, 2015  ----   Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLLS) inc. a registered not for profit charity, is pleased to announce developments regarding the Lighthouse Trail on Lake Superior.

The Lake Superior Water Trail is part of the Trans Canada Trail network that stretches from Thunder Bay, through the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) island archipelago, to Rossport, also follows part of the Lighthouse Trail. Porphyry Point Lighthouse Station, and Shaganash Lighthouse will receive $20,000 total for on-site signage to orientate and direct tourist, guests, and visitors on an interpretive journey through Lake Superior attractions.

Trans Canada Trails has announced, funding for way finding signage on the Lake Superior Water Trail for two CLLS sites; Porphyry Point and Shaganash.

Northwestern Ontario Tourism, Development Fund announced funding yesterday for product development of CLLS Lighthouse destinations on the Lighthouse Trail. Regionally focused tourism development projects including interpretive programming and surveying guests as they visit the regions lighthouses will take place in the summer months. The outcome of the funding is to provide a good database of potential customers and understand their wants/needs so CLLS can begin planning for further tourism development.

Canada Summer Jobs, a federally funded program, has given approval for a summer student to work with the CLLS on projects related to lighthouse tourism development. Currently there is a posting for a job placement that can be seen on the groups Facebook Page.

Environment Canada Minster Aglukkaq has informed Mr. Paul Capon, CLLS Chair, that Lamb Island Lighthouse has been given a heritage site designation under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. Seventy-three other lighthouses are still unnamed but these lighthouses will later be added to the list of 16 already designated under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. The future remains unknown for the other 258 lighthouses currently being petitioned for designation by Canadians, but this recent development brings with it a sense of optimism for other regional lights.

A hidden gem, Lamb Island is located within the NMCA at the south end of the Nipigon Straights in Lake Superior. There are two dwellings, two outbuildings, a light tower, and boathouse on the grounds.
