Canadian Aboriginal Art

 RINGO FIDDLER   Aborginal Artist

Ringo FiddlerI was born in Kenora, Ontario and raised in the First Nation community of Sandy Lake, Ontario. I am a self-taught artist; my art is in the Nature Woodland style. I have been doing this type of art since I was 15 years of age.

The person whom inspired me to paint was Joshim Kakegamic. He had shown me his artwork and from there I wanted to get into art. He had told me that if he could do it that I could too. I had practiced sketching and later on went into colors by using the school’s accessories, from crayons to paint.

 Shipwrecked by Ron Wrigley

Shipwreck Ron WrigleyShipwrecked by Ron WrigleyBorn in Fort William in 1951, Mr. Wrigley Graduated from Lakehead University with a degree in Geology. His interest in shipping history led to research into shipwrecks in a part of Lake Superior from which there was little information. From this research came many magazine articles as well as this, previously unpublished, manuscript detailing most of the unknown shipwrecks of Northern Lake Superior. He lives today in Thunder Bay, Ontario. "I have written this book to fill what is an obvious gap in the history of shipwrecks in Lake Superior. Many books have described in great detail the wrecks that have occurred in other parts of the lake, but none have written of the sorrow, hardships and heroism of those in northern Lake Superior."

Isle Royale 1845-1846

Angelique Mott was seventeen when she was deceived and eventually left on her own with no food to survive a frigid winter on Michigan’s famed Isle Royale. Her fight to survive is a heroic epic on the Lake Superior Frontier of 1845 and 46. James R. Stevens’ novella, based on historical fact is an emotional journey with Angelique as she starves and deals with her faith in Christianity and the spirit world of her forest people.

The Wild Journey of Canadian Artist, Norval Morrisseau

Canadian First Nation Artist from Northern Ontario

James R Stevens

An honest and revealing book about Noval Morrisseau written by James R. Stevens and authorized by the Artist, Norval Morrisseau. The brilliant and wild painting journey of Canadian artist, Norval Morrisseau is an epic in the international world of art. Norval painted at least 10 000 images during a 45 year career marked by alcoholism and addiction. Norval was an intelligent complex man caught between an ancient forest world and a westernized industrial America. He was unschooled and born into poverty at a small hamlet on the shore of Lake Nipigon in Canada during the Great Depression of the 1930's.

Strawberry Hill Werkshop

Over the past thirty years of my operating an antique business, I have  had very few occasions to purchase Strawberry Hill Pottery pieces to sell but have noticed that there has been an increasing demand to purchase them with the supply not keeping up with the demand. My wife and I would  find the occasional piece at a yard sale or at charity shop and they would be snapped  up as soon as we offered them for sale. We also took Strawberry Hill to shows that we did in  Southern Ontario and were always amazed that browsers recognized what they were and would then in turn, purchase the occasional piece. In visiting other dealers’ shops located around Thunder Bay, I would see pieces they had obtained  which then sold rather quickly. My wife’s sister, Liz Kukko was also was building a collection of Strawberry Hill and would show us new pieces that she had acquired.

Liz and Peter Powlowski were contacted, they provided me with a list of all the pieces that they had designed as well as photographs of them. The book that you are now reading along with the photo CD, is a result of  that work.
