Real-time wave information expands for paddlers and boaters in the Apostle Islands
APOSTLE, ISLANDS, WISCONSIN ~~~~~~~ June 28, 2021 (LSN) The brains behind the SeaCavesWatch.org website have developed a new website that offers real-time wave condition information for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Lake Superior. Before venturing onto the lake, paddlers and boaters should check WISC-Watch (https://go.wisc.edu/7y2x4o), which stands for Water Information for a Safe Coast Watch. The WISC-Watch site provides information from seven spotter buoys recently deployed throughout the islands, plus Chequamegon Bay near Ashland and Siskiwit Bay near Cornucopia. The buoys monitor wave height, water temperature and wind information.
Superior and Lake Michigan-Huron water levels are above their long-term averages
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~~ July 1, 2021 (LSN) Lake Superior and Lake Michigan-Huron water levels are above their respective long-term averages. Therefore, there is a risk of shoreline erosion, lakeshore flooding, and coastal damages. The International Lake Superior Board of Control (Board) advises shoreline businesses and property owners to prepare for potentially severe coastal impacts during periods of strong winds and high waves. Lake Superior outflows are set in consideration of the above-average levels upstream and downstream.

SEAWAY VISITORS’ CENTER OPENS JULY 2, 2021
MASSENA, NEW YORK ~~~~~~~~~~ June 26, 2021 (LSN) The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS) is announcing that the Dwight D. Eisenhower Visitors’ Center, located at the U.S. Eisenhower Lock in Massena, NY, will open to the public on a limited basis on Friday, July 2. It will remain open daily, including weekends, through Labor Day, September 6, 2021. The hours of operation are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily.

DNR invites public review of updated David Dill/Arrowhead State Trail master plan

The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 7 at the Cook Community Center, located at 510 Gopher Drive, Cook, MN, 55723. The public is invited to attend the open house to review the plan, ask questions and submit comments. No formal presentation will be made.

Burning restrictions expand in northern Minnesota
NORTHERN, MINNESOTA ~~~~~~ July 12, 2021 (LST) To help ensure public safety and protect natural resources, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is activating additional burning restrictions beginning 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, July 13 for the eastern portion of Roseau County and all of Beltrami, Cook, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, and St. Louis counties, within state jurisdiction.

Madeline Island Museum Reopening July 22

In addition to the daily experience offered Wednesday through Sunday every week through October 23, 2021, walking tours will be held on Wednesdays throughout the season. Madeline Island Museum also announced its annual holiday shopping event “Island Boutique” will take place on November 23, 2021.

Superior National Forest Announces Food Storage Order to Protect Both Visitors and Bears
NORTHERN, MINNESOTA ~~~~~~~ July 30, 2021 (LSNews) Beginning on July 30, 2021, all visitors to the Superior National Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) management area, will need to store their food properly to help protect wild bears and humans alike. This food storage order is the result of increases in human-bear interactions with negative outcomes.
