SAULT STE MARIE, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~~ January 17, 2023  (LSNews) Tourism Sault Ste. Marie and the Agawa Canyon Tour Train are excited to announce the return of the train for the 2023 season. This season the train will operate until October 15, a week longer than the traditional final date of the tour train.

“The 2022 season was a success,” said Wes Logan, Director of Operations at the Agawa Canyon Railroad, which owns the tour train. “That was our first year operating this service and we were delighted with the positive feedback we received from our customers and team members about the experience. In the off-season our team is focused on maintaining the track and canyon park, updating seating in select coaches, and improving sightlines and window replacement. This is all being done to ensure the iconic train continues to provide a world class experience for visitors.”

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA  ~~~~  January 17, 2023  — New research shows how humans are a substantial source of mortality for wolves that live predominantly in national parks — and more importantly, that human-caused mortality triggers instability in wolf packs in national parks.

Published today in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, the study was led by Kira Cassidy, a research associate at Yellowstone National Park, and included co-authors at five national parks and University of Minnesota Voyageurs Wolf Project researchers Thomas Gable, Joseph Bump and Austin Homkes

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~  December 14, 2022 (LONNews)    The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is conducting moose aeria inventory surveys in wildlife management units across the province to help monitor moose populations across Ontario.

Between December and February, staff are using aircraft to look for moose and their tracks in fresh, deep snow. Survey information about the number, age, and sex of moose is used to inform moose and habitat management.

Though one owl was spotted in Dane County from mid-July to mid-October (a very rare case of a snowy owl successfully over-summering in Wisconsin), the winter migrants now seem to be settling in.

Many talented wildlife artists submitted a total of 34 pieces for judging, which took place on Aug. 27 at the Wisconsin Waterfowl Expo in Oshkosh.
